Whites Now Minority in 1 in 10 U.S. Counties

The U.S. Census Bureau reported on Thursday, August 9, 2007 that Whites are now a minority in nearly 1 in 10 of the 3,141 counties in the U.S. Therefore, now more than 303 counties in the U.S. have majority-minority populations. The increase in diversity in the counties has been attributed to immigration and higher birth rates among blacks and Hispanics.

Minority Population Surpasses 100 Million People in the U.S.

The U.S. Census Bureau reported on Thursday, May 17, 2007 that the minority population in the United States has reached 100.7 million people according to national and state estimates. Louis Kincannon the Director of the Census Bureau stated in the news release that "one in three U.S. residents is a minority." The news release reported that:

Hispanics were the largest minority group that accounted for 44.3 million people

Blacks were the second-largest minority group that accounted for 40.2 million people

Asians accounted for 14.9 million people

American Indians and Alaska Natives accounted for 4.5 million people

Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Isladers accounted for 1 million people

Hispanics continue to be the fastest growing minority group followed by Asians.

Non-Hispanic whites grew only by 0.3 percent from July 1, 2005 - July 1, 2006

The minority population in the U.S. is now larger than the total population of all but 11 countries

Approximately four states and the District of Columbia are "majority-minority. These states include:

CNN Releases Poll on Racism

CNN commissioned a poll that was conducted by the Opinion Research Corp. on the subject of racism which was released on December 13, 2006. The poll revealed the following:

Most white and black Americans view racism as being a lingering problem.
About one out of eight Americans consider themselves to be racist.
About half of the black respondents - 49 percent - said racism is a serious problem, while 18 percent of whites shared the same view.
About 43 percent of whites and 49 percent of blacks said they knew someone that was racist.
About 13 percent of whites and 12 percent of blacks consider themselves to be racially biased.

The poll conducted by the the Opinion Research Corp. for CNN was based upon phone interviews conducted December 5 through
December 7, 2006.

The media age for Hispanics was 27.2 years.

Married-couples families comprised 49 percent of Hispanic households. Among Hispanic households, 19 percent were maintained by a woman with no husband present and in all about 16 percent the householder lived alone.

About 900,000 Hispanic women between the ages of 15 and 50 gave birth in the year prior to the survey, 66 percent of whom were married.

About 78 percent of Hispanic household population five years and over spoke a language other than English at home.

About 60 percent of Hispanics ages 25 and over were at least high school graduates and 12 percent had bachelor's degree or higher.
Among Cubans age 25 and over, 73 percent were at least high school graduates and 24 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher.

The median age for American Indian and Alaska Natives was 31.9 years.
Married-couple families comprised about 40 percent of American Indican and Alaska Native households. About 20 percent of households were maintained by a woman with no husband present and in 25 percent the householder lived alone.
About 44,000 American Indian and Alaska Native women between the ages of 15 - 50 gave birth in the year prior to the survey - 48 percent of those were married.
About 26 percent of the American and Alaska Native household population five years and over spoke a language other than English at home.
Among American Indian and Alaska Natives age 25 and over, 76 percent were at least high school graduates and about 14 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher.

About 218,000 Asian women between the ages of 15 and 50 gave birth in the year prior to the survey -
89 percent of those were married.
Nearly 76 percent of the Asian household population five years and over spoke a language other than English at home.
Among Asians age 25 and over, nearly 86 percent were at least high school graduates and 49 percent had a bachelor's degree or higher.

U.S. Population One-Third Minority

About 1-in-every-3 U.S. residents was part of a group other than single-race non-Hispanic white according to national estimates by race, Hispanic origin and age released by the U.S. Census Bureau. In 2005, the minority population totaled 98 million, or 33 percent, of the U.S. total of 296.4 million.

“These mid-decade numbers provide further evidence of the increasing diversity. . . population," said Census Bureau Director Louis Kincannon.

Hispanics continue to be the largest minority group at 42.7 million. With a 3.3 percent increase in population from July 1, 2004, to July 1, 2005, they are the fastest-growing group.

Unless otherwise specified, the data refer to the population who reported a race alone or in combination with one or more other races. The tables show data for both this group and those who reported a single race only.

The second largest minority group was blacks (39.7 million), followed by Asians (14.4 million), American Indians and Alaska natives (4.5 million) and native Hawaiians and other Pacific islanders (990,000). The population of non-Hispanic whites who indicated no other race totaled 198.4 million in 2005.

300 Million people living in the United States

The Census Bureau reported on Thursday, October 12, 2006, that the U.S. population will reach the historic milestone of 300 million on Oct. 17 at about 7:46 a.m. (EDT). This comes almost 39 years after the 200 million mark was reached on Nov. 20, 1967.

The estimate is based on the expectation that the United States will register one birth every seven seconds and one death every 13 seconds between now and Oct. 17, while net international migration is expected to add one person every 31 seconds. The result is an increase in the total population of one person every 11 seconds.
